The Little Thing: An Early Morning Divine Encounter

The little thing of this divine encounter occurred during one of my most recent early-morning devotional times with God, my heavenly Father, when—while in His presence—I warmly and excitedly re-lived a similar childhood experience which I had shared with my earthly father many, many years earlier.

On this morning, as I was pursuing my God and chasing my destiny, I began to excitedly praise and glorify God, giving Him thanks for all He is and has been to me (my Redeemer, my Healer, my Provider, my Protector, etc. Then, I remember suddenly being enveloped in a strong sense of warmth and intimacy as I innocently uttered these words: “Thank you, Lord, for shaking me gently this morning, waking me up so the two of us could spend our special time together.”

The gentle touch my heavenly Father used that morning to awaken me carried me back in memory to my childhood days with my earthly father (whom my siblings and I affectionately called “Papa”) would often call to me in the wee hours of the morning, saying, “Vera, wake up.” Now, if I did not arise and hit the floor just at the moment he called, Papa would come closer to me and speak again. Papa’s second call always seemed to me to be more intimate than the first: He would put his hand ever-so-gently on my shoulder, shake me lightly, and say these few words, “Vera, Vera, it’s time to get up.”

The little thing—my earthly father’s early morning wake-up call—that was seemingly insignificant during my childhood has now become highly precious when it is lined up next to the wake-up call I received from my heavenly Father decades later at about 3:45 in the morning during a daily time of devotion. My heavenly Father’s call sweetly said: “Daughter, Daughter, it’s time for you to get up. Come on; get up so we can talk and be together. It’s time for us to hang out early before anyone else gets up. You and I can share some secrets. Get up. I got something I want to share with you!”

In retrospect, my earthly father’s call summoned me to a day of earthly toils—and earthly wisdom; my heavenly Father’s call, however, summoned me to something far greater: with Him, I was being called to a divine event where I would bathe in His (my heavenly Father’s) presence and His glory, a place where I would listen to the secrets He longed to share with me, His daughter.

Let us pray. . .
Father, in the Name of your Son Jesus Christ, I thank you for your love and your desire to share secrets with your children, even me. Father, I too want your presence and love to embody me whenever I reach out to you and seek you in prayer, worship, and total devotion. As of this moment, Father, as I continue to walk out my destiny, I am looking forward to our times together when you and I will share our little secrets! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
